After five years of schooling at SFU, taking the new Interactive Arts and Technology program, enduring some of the most unusual growing pains, something has happened. I was among the many who helped to break the program and worked on some very strange, bizzare and weird projects. Did some questionable things (At least, making a project with the intent of putting our prof's neck in a noose is something I consider questionable) and still got a grade for it.

And, as of 1:05pm, I finished my very last final exam. DONE FOREVER!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go back to dancing madly around in public and finish this piece of chocolate cake.

Please Note: I still have to apply for graduation and something might go wrong. A missed course or something. I just don't think it will.

((And sorry to everyone I haven't replied to yet. Been madly studying. I'll be doing that tomorrow. I feel a beat right now.))

Okay, so that preview gave me goosebumps the first time I saw it online, and again when I saw it in theaters before The Dark Knight. I was sitting with my friend who knows absolutely nothing about The Watchmen, so when you see Rorschach staring down and hissing, in that voice of him, "And I will whisper, 'No'." I got to turn to my friend and say: "That's one of the good guys!"

Still, as awesome as it all looks, there was something that kind of bothered me. I mean, the trailer is totally awesome, sure, but something felt... off. I think I realized it after reading The Watchmen comic Wikipedia page.

They talk about how the art style in the comic leans towards realism, sticking to primary colours and Golden Age art-styles. In the trailer, all the colours are super-vivid and everything looks stylized!

It feels like the director said: "Hey look! It's a movie that used to be a comic! The movie looks like a comic!"  This is something that might have worked for 300, which was an extremely stylized comic, but it seems like stylizing The Watchmen would be taking away from it. The comic is remarkably dense with material, so I think the focus should be on the delivery and keeping the story's original integrity, rather than tout how true to the comic all the movie's angles are.

So, that's my worry with this movie. That energy was spent in the wrong places... but then again, it is a movie, and it's not like it could have the same impact that the comic, especially when they advertise it as another comic-book movie.

I think I'll enjoy it nonetheless!

I feel somewhat ambivalent towards the film. I mean, maybe it's sacrilege, but I've never ever read the comic. I got about halfway through at the local Chapters, but that's about it. Still, I can't...

WARNING! Image-heavy blog post! Loading times may not be gentle!

So! Without further ado, my visit to the Z2H Headquarters!

The backstory: I was on vacation on Vancouver island, the place where I grew up, which is only a hop and a skip and a ferry ride away from Vancouver proper where I thought I would stop by and see how this whole... "operation" runs.

ChiefZero sent out a call and a few of us gathered at the office itself where we were then treated to a fantabulous lunch of sushi and other Asian culinary delights. Personally, I thought it was great meeting not only (most of) the staff of Zeros 2 Heroes, but fellow Zeds as well!

So for those of you who aren't familiar with the layout of Vancouver, you should know about a section of town called East Hastings. In a nutshell, it's the wrong side of the track. A fantastic place to meet highly questionable people and sample a few of Vancouver's finer stabbings!

The Z2H office happens to be about a block on the wrong side of the track. Not far enough to reach the free-stabbings booth, mind you, but definitely far enough for you to realize you shouldn't wander too far. So I checked the address and came up to the building where this whole operation has been stashed. This was the building from outside:

It was fairly well-camouflaged among the other similar buildings. The address number I had matched, but even a look at the entrance door offered doubts:

Can you find the Z2H symbol in the above picture? At this resolution, I don't think you can actually see it very well. Here, I'll save you the trouble:

So this was the right place after all! I was glad, because I really did not feel like wandering East Hastings more than I had to.

So, in I go, and am almost immediately greeted by this:

Hooray! I made it, with no stabbings!

... And looks like I'm taking the stairs!

So although the building itself isn't exactly confusing in its layout, the little sling-slinging icon led me through all the right doors and passages, like so many bread crumbs:

And behold! The shining beacon of the Zeros 2 Heroes office opened up before me:

So pretty! I was first greeted by Seb, aka, Sebzilla, and then later by Matt, aka, ChiefZero. I got to meet the crew, all except Jessica who was feeling under the weather that day.

Eventually, the Zeds began pouring in and, for some reason, there began a "let's compare cell phones" game, starting with the Chief himself:

Greg, aka, Mekikas, would not be outdone:

"But wait!" said Tanya, aka, Sheakoshan, "I also have a cell phone!"

"Foolish mortals," replied John, aka, DoctorNaberius, "My cell phone was made from the souls of the damned!"

He wasn't kidding. I could hear the screams of the fallen from the deepest bowels of Hell. Great reception, too! Perfectly clear!

So then for some reason I stopped taking pictures for a while as other Zeds rolled in until it was time to grab some grub. Good times were to be had, as is evidenced by Jennica, aka, Yen, and... and, uh... Kate? I'm so bad with names (sorry, Kate! ... If it's Kate). Anyway, some of you will know her from NSI:

There was also Carmen, aka, MariahTheDreamer, having a great time seated beside Greg:

And then seated beside me, apparently having way too much fun, was Seb, aka, Sebzilla, with Ryan in the background, aka, Ryan:

And sitting at the end of the table, happily saturated with food, is our very own Morgan, aka, MorganJ (with Ryan again!):

Stuffed and happy, a few of us then proceeded to raid the local comic book store of several of its wares (leaving behind monetary compensation) before I eventually said my last good-byes and sailed back to Vancouver island:

Until next time!

Well. My apologies for not writing more often. Rest assured that there have been many many keystrokes happening...just not on the blog. Definitely on the laptop.

My third-person adventure game, Off the Grid, is 99% there. Which is why I have a couple of brain cells left to blog. (Thank goodness. I was a little worried the poor grey matter wasn't going to make it.)

It's been a lot of fun and a lot of work to get this wee world off the ground. In this process, my respect for game designers has deepened in a major way.

I don't think I realized just how much mental gymnastics goes into making each and every decision for a game. If only you could see a visual of tossed away words on the floor ... compared to the words that end up on the page. Let's just say you'd be waist-deep in verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Oh. And expletives. Lots and lots of expletives.

Our deadline is Saturday, and I promise I will post more about my game by then. I will also post some truly incredible art (sketches of a couple of characters) by my very talented friend, Luke. I am a writer through and through. But Luke. He's a visual genius.

So, there you go -- more to look forward to as we gallop our way toward the finish line!

There is a brave new group forming here at Z2H with the aim of helping people out with their pitches.  The group would look at one pitch each month, and everyone in the group would have the responsibility to at least go in and look at the pitch at some point during the 30 days (so it is not an onerous chore),  This group is not being headed up by myself, despite the fact my cute green mug is on the cover, but by your very own favorite little creator, TK Jr.  Don't be shy!  Sign up today!
And while you are at it, why not join up for the Unofficial Thunkup #3 group that the other green dude has going?

Once again the 6th rolls around, and there's a brand new production diary for Watchmen, due out March 6th, 2009. This month we are treated to a closer look at the design and construction of the Owlship that was featured last month at the San Diego Comic-Con. For those of you who were not able to attend, this might be your first look at this awesome piece of design. Enjoy!

A few weeks ago I was in BC and had the pleasure of stopping by the Z2H HQ and took a few pictures of the Z2H "operation". As I post this, the pictures are on my other computer, so you'll get to see those later tonight. This post is more to give those that care a status update on me.

While I was on vacation, the guy to whom I had delegated all my work got fired, so when I got back it was really as if I'd never left! In the sense that I had all that fantastic work to catch up on.

Not only that, but shortly thereafter I learned that my next business trip will be to Tokyo, Japan! How freakin' awesome is that?! But as awesome as that is, it also means I've started working with the studio from afar, thus increasing my workload. So I haven't actually disappeared or anything... just buried under a mountain of work!

Anyway, tonight's post should be much more interesting.

Well, after two and a half days, the power is back on and the skies are clear (knock on wood).

My Vision Document is nearing competition - the text is more or less done and all that's left is to add the various pictures of actors, Rockford and who knows what else to the VD.

Good news though - I've linked up with my editor Alex Cieslik. After I finish the VD, our new artist will take the pin-up to task: Daniel Bradford of Gustav Hayes fame!

Also, one of my side projects is finally seeing some fruition, Hard Driving Heroes is a work-for-hire I've been writing for about a year now, and the website and production is finally coming together. There's already twenty-five pages posted as well as even a rock n' roll soundtrack you can buy in the shop's page! It's really been quite an experience - it's one of the things I credit with my writing style because it forced me to sit down and turn out a script day after day after day!

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Fantasy time, again, people!
All comic companies have been officially closed up and put out of business, totally and forever.
You have been hired to start up a new comic book company, the only one in the world and you are allowed to start with any three comic book characters (heroes, villains, supporting characters, etc.) you wish.  After starting with those three characters you will build your new Universe and Empire with the creations of you and all your friends from Z2H who you will be hiring to help you (and paying top dollar too, I might add).
These characters come with no baggage, it is as if they have never existed and you can shape them as you wish.
There is a catch though.
You cannot pick all three characters from just one comic book universe (though you can pick two of them from one source, say Marvel for example), and you have to pick at least one person from each gender.  Ladies and gentlemen, let the draft begin!

...or, How the Hell do I get into these things.

With me, it's always about momentum. As long as there's energy flowing into something, I keep pouring myself into it. So it's predictable that when things are going well, I'll keep devoting energy into making them as good as can be.

Same with writing. When the words start flowing, you don't stop something good; you encourage it, nurture it, let it run its course. It'd be stupid to let something that good go to waste, right?

Well, now I have the same problem with drawing. But my drawing habit is weird: if I have but a vague idea and try to freehand it, I'll mess it up, it will upset me, and I won't draw again for weeks. But, if I got something solid and I get some visual references to get started, boy oh boy, it could become anything great.

I full-bodytackled my drawing table less than two weeks ago "searching" for Teresa's look (you'll get to know her soon enough). Only I did my job too well. And when I was done, I still hadn't found Teresa.
No, I came naturally back to Gabriele, from Deutschmaschine, once again. Dammit.

So I started drawing more, to get the ideas flowing. To find purpose, looks, impressions, emotions! But instead I got nabbed by my old idealistic self. And now that I've finished the rough for the latest character I'm drawing, I have two new problems:
  1. I don't whether he's my character or some other Z2Her's. Meaning, I have to decide, as I clean up the sketch into a finished drawing, if he'll finish up as my character or one of yours; and,
  2. I'll have a few surprises for the CCN winners to go along with the release of their books.
Damn. As much as this means I'm not working on my own stuff as much as I should, I'm still having one hell of a blast!

Checklist time. Let's see if I can actually pull this off before the release...
Pinups have been made or are almost finished for:
  • Jason
  • Carmen
  • Jennica
  • Kevin
  • Tom
  • myself
Meaning, I still have:
  • John
  • Dylan
  • Stephen
  • Nick (character selected)
  • William (character selected)
  • Greg (character selected)
...to go.
Man. Think I can finish that before the books are released?

:D
