I posted this on the beta blog the other day, not realizing that it wouldn't show up on the old fashioned blog. It's my breakdown of my enemies. On the whole, I'm not quite as happy about them as I am my hero units, but hey, it's a work in progress, alright?
ENEMIES:
- ANTS (TAG LINE: "We can also be uncles")
o Ants (and other insects) typically hate viruses. They just want to go about their daily lives, and viruses just serve to upset the balance in any ecosystem they enter. And now that Floyd is replicating viruses left and right, ants just might have to lead the charge for the insects and take the viruses down a peg or two.
ABILITIES:
Mandible Grab: Grabs a unit and crushes it in its vice like mandibles.
Four Legs Good, Six Legs Better: Speed burst to out run enemies
Hive Mind: When attacked, sends out distress signal to other ants in the vicinity, summoning help
- VITAMIN C (Tag Line: "I'm Vitamin C and I'm super happy to meet you!")
o Vitamin C is the happiest fucking vitamin in the world. It lives to increase the immune system, and flush out viruses. Its cheery demeanor is reinforced by the fact that everything now a days has vitamin C, so expect to encounter it not as a single unit, but in waves
ABILITIES:
Happy!: Sends hugs and kisses streaming out from his body, and causes enemies to temporarily stop what they are doing and hug one and other.
Flavour Splash: Vitamin C unleashes a barrage of flavour spikes that explode on contact with an enemy. Available in both orange and grape.
- ANTIBIOTICS (TAG LINE: "Take me with your meals and I'm super effective!")
o Antibiotics seem to start floating around the house once you've infected Suzie and Herb Johnson. They live to destroy viruses. They basically serve as biological cops. They'll stop at nothing until they've flushed out that viral menace!
ABILITIES:
Freeze, Virus!: Send out a cooling nasal mist that will freeze an enemy in its place.
Avenging Ointment: Covers the enemy in an ointment that will damage them over time, and hinder the use of certain abilities.
Drop This: A geyser of eye drop solution is sprayed over enemies, damaging them in a fine mist.
- WHITE BLOOD CELLS (TAGLINE: "The best, last defense")
o The white knights of the immune system. White blood cells are the guardians to the infected, and are highly trained in anti-viral techniques. Watch out, because they'll get stronger as you progress in the game. (Something about training with antibodies?)
ABILITIES:
Armoured Capsid: WBC come equipped with a strong suit of armour that coats their capsid, as well as a shield that can deflect attacks.
Bashful: WBC hit the enemy with its shield, causing a stun effect that will render the attacker immobile for a few seconds.
System Shock: WBC fires out a taser like flagella that will shock the attacker over a period of time.
There's been some interesting stuff online talking about writing in vidoe games and development in general. The most recent 1up Yours podcast (http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3149993) has a pretty cool interview with Dennis Dyack, the lead developer at Silicon Knights, who's newest game "Too Human" is taking a lot of flack lately in the gaming media. He talks a bit about game writing, but more about scoring and ratings and the effects of forums on peoples perceptions on games. It's a pretty crazy interview. There's also an article on 1up about game writing (http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3168432). One final thing, the Team Fortress 2 blog has been updated and they talk about the process of designing updates to their game, and what goes into that process, which is also kind of neat (http://www.teamfortress.com).
It's been a pretty crazy couple of weeks (Diablo 3, anyone?). Can't wait to see what E3 is going to hold for game nerds like me. Anyone looking forward for anything in particular?

Thanks Caley, I almost laughed hard enough to spit hot tea all over my monitor after reading the Vitamin C description! I don't know why, but I'm picturing Vitamin C as a Japanese girl superhero like Cutie Honey here. She'd wear a bright orange and pink spandex costume and point at an opponent while yelling SUUUUPAAAA HAAAPPYYY BUUURASTO!!! (Subtitle: Super Happy Blast!) I love these enemies, especially how they provide different types and levels of challenges. Question: Are you picturing a turnaround mode in your game in which you get to play "the bad guys"? Because that would be insanely fun... And thanks for the links. Gamasutra's had a lot of interesting game writing articles lately too. For example, here's one about personalizing RPG characters: http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/3704/innovations_in_character_.php
