CONCEPT
Escape into the dreams of Simon Reve seconds after he blearily realizes he may be about to die. Race the clock as you confront transcendental dreamscapes containing fantastical and nightmarish environments rich with symbols linking to real life events, fears and conflicts in Simon's life. As you arrive, the dreamworld is in complete chaos as fantasy, nightmare and reality bleed. The instigation of this chaos is the escape of a madman from the dreamworld's most terrifying and secure asylum. Where he goes, fear and chaos follow. You are charged with returning order to this world by confronting this madman who people only refer to as the Shadow. You must track him down and unravel the mystery of his identity, this world and your ties to it as you explore 8 unique mission levels. Each of these missions will be based on common stories familiar to dreamers and the collective unconscious, such as fairy tales, mythology, warped reality and a psycho filled haunted mansion. However, as you go deeper into Simon's mind, these stories become quite twisted from their standard storyline. These missions are a bit of a mystery about Simon and encapsulate real fears in his life that he needs to overcome before he can even be prepared to take on the Shadow. You can choose to complete these missions using stealth, force or clever puzzle solving techniques. You can also choose how and if you interact with the people of this world, including those who bear an uncanny resemblance to your loved ones. Reading people correctly and choosing dialogue successfully can yield health rewards and help reduce the increasing whisperings that you are in fact helping the Shadow in some way. However, be careful of whose advice you follow; not everyone is as they seem. Regardless, choose wisely because all of these choices not only have implications on your reputation and developing strengths, but the personality and battle choices you do not choose, will become the strengths of the Shadow, who you will inevitably confront before this dream is over.
And as a final favour to poor Simon, try to help him understand who he is by exploring the clues left lying around in his head. Understanding this will undoubtedly help give him the peace of mind he's longing for and it will certainly help you out on your quest.
THEME
Fear life: fear dying.
The hero of everyone's life story is their self. However, Simon feels he's still far from the person and "hero" he longs to be and fears an early death because of it. He immediately regrets what little he's done to get what he needs and wants in life as he lay dying with little hope for a second chance. The main reasons for these shortcomings are because Simon is indecisive, repressive and never takes risks. In this game, Simon must finally deal with these repressed issues and make tough decisions that will have real repercussions in the dreamworld culmination of his psyche and fears. Otherwise he must face death, as it lurks around every corner and comes for him if he waits too long.
Perhaps these decisions will also impact what little chance he has at life in reality...

Wow, there's a lot of atmospheric material here. I like your mission settings, and how seem to be varied and somehow twisted. My thoughts are muddled on the player's goal, though. If I understand correctly, as a player I'm stranded in Simon's unconscious, and I'm trying to confront his 'inner demons' to bring peace and resolution to his life. But how will this inner resolution affect Simon's outer life? The thing that confuses me, I suppose, is that I don't know what the prize is. Is Simon doomed to die whether or not he figures himself out? Or will defeating the Shadow let him do something to stay alive? Or, more melodramatically, will defeating the Shadow allow him to give up his life for a greater purpose? I suppose it's the word 'hero' that confuses me. If Simon wants to be a hero, he'll have to become more self-aware, but then he'll be forced to risk death more than if he'd stayed in his shell. Or is it 'Victoria, et per victoriam vita?'
