On FalaPosted by Beth A Dillon in Fala, APTN CCN comic creation nation, APTN, aboriginal |
For me, Fala is a fun tongue-in-cheek type of story that comes from, obviously, Alice in Wonderland. It's like a modern urban Native take on the old story. When I first thought of it in the form of a short film, I was thinking about what a great Trickster (Cheshire Cat) character a friend named Cowboy Smithx would make (tall quirky Blackfoot) and what a great Badger (Caterpillar) Duane Howard would be. Plus, I've always wanted to see him in a film playing his flute rather than just dying in five different ways as a stunt man. Ha ha ha.
The problem comes when you break out of the woods though. Suddenly, there's really not an attainable film budget for me to get to make a creepy dark hazy rez town exactly how I picture it in my mind. A lot of lighting issues and colorization issues, which could be handled in post, but it would be a big experiment.
But a comic book! Wow, how they open up the way for storytelling. I realize how much time and effort goes into the craft of telling a story in comic book format, but it seems much more attainable and easier to transfer the visuals in your mind.
Overall, this is the fun one, the quick and quirky story that could be told in 22 pages and wrap up nicely. I plan to start on another much more mature steampunk pitch shortly here, since it's asking to get written.
