In case anyone's wondering what the CCN pre-production and production process is like, I thought I'd blog about it. I know I was really curious about what happens once a pitch hits #1...
So I found out last Monday Abigail's War was this week's winner. Whoo-hoo! Too bad I was travelling all day. Weird way to celebrate. Right away that day, I got emails from two Z2Hfolks -- the Studio Manager and the Marketing Dude (Hi, Scott!). A bunch of things were required right up front: the signing of a variety of paperwork including the Z2H contract, as well as some materials needed for the book's press kit. Since I'm a Vancouverite, I dropped the paperwork off in person at Z2H HQ -- a truly beautiful, creative, open-concept space that must be the best-kept secret in the city.
At that point it became really clear that I'm now no longer anonymous. Oooh! Exciting, I guess. So in the name of transparency (it's the new privacy, you know -- that, or the new black), here's the RL me .
This past Friday, I heard from Z2H's Editor Julian, who filled me in on what to expect in the coming weeks, and let me know that my Editor for Abigail's War will be the formidable Robert Parizek. Saturday morning, Robert and I spoke and he walked me through the process to come in more detail, including briefing me on the Vision Document discussed elsewhere (by Lord Maim, anyway). It's going to be much fun -- I'd already started it on my California holiday, because what's more fun than actor-shopping? Incidentally, if any actor sprang to your mind for any of the AW characters, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts. I'll probably go with my instincts, but maybe someone has the perfect look and isn't on my radar -- let me know what you think!
I'm very stoked Robert's on board, because it was clear to me early on in the pitching of the book that he gets it and really believes in it. From his end, Robert's currently reviewing the script and this week we'll be discussing any editorial changes we might want to make, and looking at thumbnails of the pages (how the panels would lay out as written, and whether or not the panel composition could be better).
Next steps: complete the Vision Doc, and get on the Z2H Dashboard where all work and revisions are posted and commented on. After that, we start to talk seriously about art.
I'm ready for you, Week Two.

Thanks for the insight into what (I guess) I'm in for this week. What a long strange trip this has been. Congrats again, Superstar! Keep us informed!

OMG, Yen, I just read your webiste: no wonder your story is so good. What a talent. I'm actually a little embarrassed to follow you (but at least I didn't finish ahead of you, and now I know that is a good thing!).

Tenzil, congratulations!! I can't wait to see how your book develops -- in particular, I'm curious about the art style you'll go with. It could go a number of ways, in my mind. Have fun!! And the idea that I'm more qualified than anyone else on here is crazy -- this field is so new to me. So let's be stopping with that talk right now, yes?

I'll stop with the talk because technically we are on the same level now (at least here at Z2H). I'm so excited right now. I could barely get to sleep last night and I am so eager to start taking the next step I could just spit! And certainly, if nothing else, I definitely intend to have FUN along the way.

Heh heh... "so excited you could spit." Well! The sooner you get your contracts and vision doc in, the sooner you can get your art team assigned! (that's when things start to get really "real" ;-)
