Bit of breather, yeah? It's been some time since the last "official" post from me regarding the Manga Memoirs anthology. In the interim, I've been busy editing another project, a complete 360 turn in subject matter, content and the ever important VOICE.
I'm not ready to do the post mortem on the first official Manga anthology just yet, soon though. The project from soup to nuts was a very good experience for me, in terms of what I learned and the finished product. It's been well received so far.
One thing I should mention here, is that the scripts for the anthology are currently being translated into Japanese (!!!) That's exciting, non? Stay tuned for updates as translation progresses.
In other news, it turns out I'll be attending San Diego Comic Con this July. The first for me. I'm...apprehensive? That would be putting it mildly, very mildly. I'm highly uncomfortable around several elements of genre entertainment fandom. Nothing personal. I agitate easily when conversation veers too close to "Wolverine could totally beat up..." territory. I judge harshly. I'm a bit of a self-loathing fanboy? Is that statement redundant?
Maybe? I nerd out over different things I guess. Music. Intersecting Nodes of Culture. A character in a film mentioning (vaguely) a line from a novel, song comic etc. It's all the same right? Everything referencing everything else until it's all one writhing mass of culture.
Anyway...
The wrap up edition of Thanks For The Memories should be along shortly, sometime within the next couple of weeks. I'll somehow wrap it with my report on the Anime Evolution festival? Convention? Panel?

I gotta admit I wondered what that caption meant when I read it. I mean, you're green, right? That guy isn't green. I'm uncomfortable.

That's not TK, he's not green. And just having a green shirt doesn't make him TK. Other than my snide remark, gratz on a finished job done well.

I kind of enjoy those 'who would win if Superman fought the Hulk' conversations. Just let go of the ironic self-awareness and enjoy it. If you are going to be a geek, you have to wallow in it, I say.

I agree, Crackwalker - although I tend to have those conversations in less socially-acceptable places - like at parties surrounded people who just roll their eyes. Explains why I'm still single!
I can understand Morgan's apprehensiveness though. It's not so much "Who would win - Red Hulk or Superman Prime" that's bothersome as much as "Who would win - Red Hulk, Superman Prime or Blake Undying?" Comic cons can be so super-saturated with the mainstream it's hard to get people to try the alternative.
I was talking to a young aspiring creator on the phone the other day, fresh out of high school, and his first question was "So which company do you write for, Marvel and DC?" I told him I hadn't quite made it to that level, but there are other companies out there.
There was silence on the other end of the phone, followed by "So do you write for Image?"
That's kinda what I see at cons.

I thought we weren't going to use that first picture of me when I was warming up.
And, as you can clearly see, it was a great idea to ask Aya to join us on the panel! At least when they got bored with Morgan and my attempts at being witty they had someone to look at!
