Today.

I'll just come out and say this at the head---I'm not a fan of the vampire film. Any vampire film that doesn't have Kiefer Sutherland sporting a Kentucky Waterfall. Which to those of you who read these posts regularly probably assumed. I'm not a fan of very much these days.

That being said, this trailer for Daybreakers got me. It was a combination of stills, the cutting of the trailer and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the music choice in the latter half.

It's a Placebo cover of Kate Bush's 'Running Up That Hill' Surprise, surprise, I like neither of the musical acts, but the combination works.

This concept has a clever enough twist that it might be enjoyable, in an Event Horizon or even In the Mouth Of Madness sort of way.

Here are some of the stills that caught my eye.

Oh yeah, Sam Neill is in it as well. SAM NEILL, as you know, is the shit.

Later.

I never understood the overwhelming popularity of vampires. Sure, they're cool, but werewolves (or any form of lycanthrope, for that matter) are so much cooler. And of course, vampires are less cool since the whole 'Twilight' thing.

And yes, Mr Neill is the man.

Vampires are like zombies.  They were cool, but now they're freaking everywhere and I just don't care anymore.

Nah, vampires are cooler than werewolves. The reason vampires are so popular is that they're mysterious. Anyone can be a vampire. (At least anyone you meet at night, LOL). Depending on what lore and "look" you believe, vampires can look exactly like us and you won't know they're a monster until they're biting your neck. Whereas werewolves are obviously monsters the moment they transform. Even their attack has been romanticized. For vampires, when they go to your neck you expect something almost pleasurable, like a hickey, whereas when a werewolve tackles you to the ground, you expect them to rip your neck apart like a hungry dog eating a steak.

People have been saying vampires were dead for as far back as I can remember, even while Buffy and Angel were doing well and Blade was getting sequels, etc. And in novels from Anne Rice through Twilight there always seems to be a popular vampire series going at any given time. So while many of us get to the "I don't care anymore" point, most of us also get sucked back in by a 30 Days of Night or a Let the Right One In or whatever. (Ditto for zombies and Resident Evil, Marvel Zombies, 28 Days Later, etc.)

Nah, werewolves are way cooler than vampires.

Maybe I just like the simplicity of lycanthropes. No stuffy rules like avoiding sunlight or running water or holy water or  pointy sticks. Every once in a while you just have a really bad hair day and feel the urge to hunt stuff. And vampires have been seriously watered down by all that romanticizing.

I can't believe we never had a vamp vs were discussion ages ago! (Unless I missed it. Did I miss it?)

No stuffy rules? What about only changing on a full moon and only being killed by silver? And vampires are smarter; they retain their intelligence and memories, whereas lycans often turn into full animals going on instinct alone and forgetting what they did afterwards.

I'm sure vampires will go on and thrive for more years than I'll live to see, but I am still sick of them.

@ Asclepius: You should read my pitch Gothamer Strands for a fresh take on Vampires!  You'll probably (almost certainly) be still sick of them, but at least you will have a peek at a new take on the vampire mythos.
@ STURS: I think we did quite a ways back, but without Mr. Man around these days I doubt anyone will be able to find it!  Maybe if you do a search in the tags?
@ genrewriter: Never mind the debate between vampires and werewolves - what is the freaking deal with zombies?  That is one that I just never got.

@TK: Vampires and werewolves still retain a lot of their human qualities. Zombies are decaying, mush-brained, monsters...yet they can still be your loved ones and neighbors. Wooden stakes and silver bullets won't kill them, they don't abide by any rules for being invited in and aren't controlled by the sun or moon; they're pretty relentless. In fact, cut off their arm and chances are the arm will still attack you! Scary, freaky stuff.

I saw Sam Neill on the subway in NYC! He was looking at a map and was SO confused. I about s**t my britches, let me tell you. That was the day AFTER seeing (and hearing) Steve Buscemi talking on his cel phone outside his condo. End of starf**king.

This movie looks neat, Morgan. I don't like much each other, so I can relate to you, but I do love Kate Bush.

@Morgan: A what on your where now?

As people in Australia say "No worries, mate!" I heard they MAKE you say that in Australia. How come Australia and Austria are almost the same name? That's weird.

Well, Australis means south in Latin and that's the root for both countries and...

Or are you implying another thing?

Werewolves beat vampires hands down. But then again, one of my newest creations is a werewolf, so I'm very biased.

@GW: That's it; just two rules. And those are flexible, depending on your mythology.

@Asclepius: Hear! Hear!

@TK: Zombies are great! You never have to feel bad about beating them to a pulp! I think MrIrony is our resident zombie expert. If he pops his head in at some point you can ask him to explain their awesomeness.

@Atomic: Steve Buscemi rules! Regarding the OZ/Austria similarity: Buggered if I know. (That's something else we MAKE you say down here, as well as g'day and strewwwwth! And of course we'll insist on calling you Bruce.)

@STURST: I still remember the day I asked my Mom why she wouldn't let me call my sister a "bugger", you know, when she was bugging me. Mom wouldn't explain. Then I read a pirate novel and was like "ooooooooh. ewwwwwwwwwwww." (No offense, anybody. To each their own. 10 year old Atomic Skull felt that way about all sexy things.)

@Atomic: The British made up all the best words. Hands down.

@STURSTEIN: No. It's because the comic takes place in space and since Vampires are weak against the sun, it's kind of hard having them fly about in a spaceship when each star wants to kill them.

@Bryan: Tinted windows?

  • +1

BryanStatic

@Asclepius: Actually, vampires do show up. Their spaceship replaces all their windows with cameras and on the interior there are screens everywhere showing lifesize  images of what's going on outside. I assume vampires aren't hurt by recorded footage of suns, right?

All that just seems a little too much for a main character, but that's just me.
