Enfield & Wizenty Announces Fiction Contest

This year Enfield & Wizenty launches a fiction contest to celebrate our own survival, as we go into our third season as a national fiction imprint of Great Plains Publications. For this champagne-soaked third year, Enfield & Wizenty is offering a $5,000 advance for the most outstanding submission of literary fiction that we receive. We will be reading fiction submissions (novels and collections of short stories) from now until December 2009. Short story collections should have appeared extensively in Canadian literary magazines.

For information on our first two seasons click on the Enfield & Wizenty tab above; please note that we?re not interested in genre novels?crime, science fiction, romance etc. Simultaneous submissions are fine, but do let us know.

DEADLINE: Dec. 1, 2009.

Please submit sample and query letter to:

You have until close to the end of the year, JM. And if you're not quite finished in time, that's okay because they just want a sample (which usually means the first 3 chapters), so then you can finish while they're judging the contest.

I'm not going to enter, though. If they're not interested in genre novels, I'm not interested in them.

Thanks for posting this. I hope a zed wins.

Sounds intriguing, J-Mick.  Your one sentence, "Short story collections should have appeared extensively in Canadian literary magazines." makes me wonder, however.  Does this mean you have to have had many of your short stories appear already in Canadian Literary magazines?  Or does it mean something else?  Am I excluded because I haven't been published in CLM's?

Never mind:  I withdraw the question.  That will teach me to read the guidelines for myself.

Good luck, jmcleod. I'm thinking about dusting off one of my two Nanowrimo drafts and re-working them into something submittable. Since they're both firmly footed in genre territory, I won't be entering this one.

Go wow them jm and just remember don't sweat the small stuff - put your best foot forward in your sample and I'm sure you'll do fine!

What counts as "a sample?" Does the book have to be finished at the time, or is just the sample alright? The website told me nothing!!!! GAAAH! AMERICAN RAGE FREAKOUT!

 Also, who's eligible to enter?

@Panic: As I mentioned above, the first three chapters are normally what you send when a sample is required. Sometimes they only want the first 30 pages or 50 pages or something, but if so then they'll specifically say so. However, according to the guidelines for regular submissions to this imprint, they actually only need one sample chapter. And, yes, normally books have to be completed ahead of time (unless you're already a proven, successful writer). Unfortunately, their guidelines also suggest that they only publish Canadians in this imprint.
