WOOT!!

Starting today, 11 straight days of vacation time, freedom, R&R.
That means:
  • Toronto Fan Expo
  • CCN pinups and drawing in general
  • Writing
  • Working on Deutschmaschine
  • Relaxing
  • Overhauling my living quarters
  • A trip to the beach, surely
  • And maybe a UT2 interview or two.

On the pinup front, I have an announcementto make:

Since Jason is leaving soon for India, I plan on releasing his next. Maybe tomorrow. Or tonight, depends how rested I am. After that, you, dear Z2H people, ALL of you, pick the next one amongst the following three:
  1. Slaughter Inc.
  2. Supremacy: Dawn of Heroes
  3. Mind Crimes
The choice is yours!!!

My choice is -- surprise! -- Mind Crimes. But I wouldn't blame you if you chose relaxing and the beach instead!

On one hand, I've got pinups, which I'm having a lot of fun doing, actually. My hand feels better, more in control than ever... My references are solid and I'm still able to free-hand a lot of additional stuff.

Then there's the deadline, for tomorrow, for revisions on Deutschmaschine. Because even though we haven't spoken about it much, that's right, our comics are loaded up and *almost* ready to go. We're submitting last-minute revisions.

Now, I can draw... or I can finish my revisions.
Draw. Revision.
Submit a new CCN Pinup. Get my book done the way I'd prefer it to be. Hm.
Heck, I could even start working on the UT3 :D

Will I sound like a freak if I say I'm truly having a hard time deciding?
(might be due to the fact that I'm unable to load my comic at work, and that I also need Photoshop and Illustrator to make my revisions as complete as possible.)

Still... Since I like a challenge... let's do both!!

Happily drooling over hawt comic viewer graphiks yo,

No need to worry about working on the pinups.  We've seen plenty already!  ;-)
And I agree, do both.  Heck, do all three.  Who knows, maybe you'll...

It wasn't easy to decide. I've got some decent ones here next to me, finished enough to classify for upload. It's difficult to decide when you want to give one character all the spotlight.

Okay. This little paragraph should be enough to hide the revelation from the sneak peak window on the blog window, forcing you to click it open :D

Here we go.

CCN Pinup #2: Gary Marsh, from Kevin McKay's Minus One:

In my genes' fire is the hourglass of my life.
(click to embiggen in another window)

I imagined Gary hailing a cab, stressed out of his mind getting to work at the airport on time, and spontaneously combusting from the pressure.
If you think it sucks to replace all those burnt clothes, just imagine the time and energy spent getting back your melted social security, medicare, and credit card...

Comments and harsh critics welcome. I've spent time on Penciljack, so I can take some honest truth :)
The literary types can crit my poetic captions too. I like to "name" my work with flowery prose. I've been reading my Tao Te Ching too much, I think...

Which one's next? Hmm... I've got ideas. Do you?
(Maybe I should start accepting bribes.)

P.S.: Seb, Ryan? The picture upload tool is much, much, MUCH more efficient indeed. Good job!!!

Okay. Okay, here goes:

Do you guys ever get something we Quebecois call an "auditive hallucination", being you misinterpret something that's being said, spoken, sung for something else that somehow makes sense?

Well, having French for a first language and listening to 80% English music, 17% German and 3% French (roughly), I get that a lot.

So firing up iTunes I listen to the latest album of one of my favorite underground bands, Colony 5, and I hear something that fires up my imagination like mad. But, as you might guess by now, that sort of thing never happens in relation to any actual pitches or artwork I'm slaving for. No, it's in relation to *that other pitch* I've been pondering and hinting at. The old character concept I digged up? That I'd exploit in a Steampunk setting? Yeah...

So listening to Closure by the same band, the lyrics go:
"Your catwalk face means nothing here..."

...and I heard:
"Your clockwork face means nothing here..."

Clockwork. Steampunk. Pitch. Writing. Characters. Catch my drift? How in Heaven's name am I supposed to ignore such a significant misunderstanding now?

*groan*

Okay, yeah, well... Let's just focus elsewhere.

I'm now taking bet or arguments on which CCN pinup I should release next.
Barring that, which character am I drawing for whom? Or, even, which ones would YOU like to see??
(if you get someone's pinup character right on the first try, I'll reveal it)

Fire away!!

Goin' back to the doodlin',

I love the famous Jimi Hendrix line, " Scuse me while I kiss this guy".  I think you should release Lord Maim's pin up next: after all, he won first.  My guess is you did...

...or, How the Hell do I get into these things.

With me, it's always about momentum. As long as there's energy flowing into something, I keep pouring myself into it. So it's predictable that when things are going well, I'll keep devoting energy into making them as good as can be.

Same with writing. When the words start flowing, you don't stop something good; you encourage it, nurture it, let it run its course. It'd be stupid to let something that good go to waste, right?

Well, now I have the same problem with drawing. But my drawing habit is weird: if I have but a vague idea and try to freehand it, I'll mess it up, it will upset me, and I won't draw again for weeks. But, if I got something solid and I get some visual references to get started, boy oh boy, it could become anything great.

I full-bodytackled my drawing table less than two weeks ago "searching" for Teresa's look (you'll get to know her soon enough). Only I did my job too well. And when I was done, I still hadn't found Teresa.
No, I came naturally back to Gabriele, from Deutschmaschine, once again. Dammit.

So I started drawing more, to get the ideas flowing. To find purpose, looks, impressions, emotions! But instead I got nabbed by my old idealistic self. And now that I've finished the rough for the latest character I'm drawing, I have two new problems:
  1. I don't whether he's my character or some other Z2Her's. Meaning, I have to decide, as I clean up the sketch into a finished drawing, if he'll finish up as my character or one of yours; and,
  2. I'll have a few surprises for the CCN winners to go along with the release of their books.
Damn. As much as this means I'm not working on my own stuff as much as I should, I'm still having one hell of a blast!

Checklist time. Let's see if I can actually pull this off before the release...
Pinups have been made or are almost finished for:
  • Jason
  • Carmen
  • Jennica
  • Kevin
  • Tom
  • myself
Meaning, I still have:
  • John
  • Dylan
  • Stephen
  • Nick (character selected)
  • William (character selected)
  • Greg (character selected)
...to go.
Man. Think I can finish that before the books are released?

:D

Loved Katy Litter (the title mousetrap & litter is cool) and I lied Wacky Wolf and Spyshell.

Individually I loved your drawings for 100,000 hits but as a group picture it looked too much...

Hey guys,

Seems that reaction to the comic has been quit positive and I’m pleased to see that.  All of us worked extremely hard on it and a lot of talented people have sacrificed a lot of time and effort to make something we were all happy with.

But of all the Reboot images that have ever been made I’d dare say that no one has put as much time and effort into an image as I’ve put into this one.  I’d really like to hear your thoughts on it, and if you like it I encourage you to take it and let it spread like a virus throughout the web.  I’m going to post this low res version first but I’ll attempt to post the hi res version on here as well.

All the best and I really appreciate the enthusiasm of the Reboot fans,

Smartens

Hello!

I think the thing that would benefit my pitch for the comic, PAIN, the most right now would be a sketch of the protagonist, Pain.  Unfortunately, I'm extremely poor at drawing, and need the help of a talented artist.

If I was a talented sketch artist, I'd be interested in sketching Pain because the character looks interesting, unique, vicious and cool.

Here's an extremely detailed physical description of the character:

Pain wears a leather mask kind of like The Gimp from Pulp Fiction except without the zipper covering his mouth. There's holes torn from the leather for his nostrils. The mask is sewn to his face, so there's stitching around his eyes, mouth and neck to keep the mask from coming off easily. He looks like he's been in a lot of fights, so his nose is broken and looks pretty flat under the mask, almost like he doesn't have a nose as though his head is just a skull. There's also a lot of random stitches in his mask from where he's been cut by knives and such and the leather has been repaired.

Around his eyes and mouth you can see a some of his skin which has been burnt by lightning. You should google "lightning burn" for reference. Lightning burns kind of look like lightning as they leave a wavy jagged mark on your skin. Pain's burns are darker than most.

Pain's teeth have been replaced by sharp metal teeth. Similar to Jaws in the Bond movies, but they look more like a bear trap. His teeth are a little too big for his mouth, so even when he closes his teeth, his lips can't quite fit around them. His lips and tongue are also cut and scarred from accidentally biting them.

Though he generally looks pretty deformed and scary, he has sad light blue eyes that make him seem human and depressed.

He wears a black biker style leather jacket, torn baggy blue jeans and black leather combat boots. His jacket, like his mask, has a lot of stitches all over it from where he's been cut and the jacket has been repaired. Underneath his jacket, overlapping strips of leather have been sewn to his body. The leather on his chest looks a little like Edward Scissorhands.

His jeans have some stitches in them too, but there's also a lot of holes especially around his knees. The skin you see through the holes also has a lightning burn pattern. His boots are old and worn.

He's muscular like he works out, but he's not a huge body builder. He's got big biceps and shoulders. He's also a little hunched and slouches. His knuckles are big from being broken a lot and his hands are covered in scars and stitches.

Pain also has a form of CIPA so he never sweats.

For more info on PAIN, check out the pitch at: http://www.zeros2heroes.com/pitch/544

Let me know if you're interested in making a sketch!

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Mike Jack

You may want to put sketches into a gallery and just stop a link to it so anyone interested can collect and follow it. I don't know if that's easier with your current blog problems.

UPDATE! My official website is online.

My website “Project: AGU (Anything Goes)” is online. This website is the one-stop source to all my proposed comic book pitches and characters. It includes title synopsis and character art and profiles. Featured in the website are my current Zeros2Heroes pitches Superhawke and Redd Blodd as well as other interesting titles.

This site is undergoing heavy construction, so do not be surprises if some of the pages’ layout is different from the other pages. I hope you visit my page and give me comments on how you like it.

Well this is the inaugural blog none will likely read,  but in case someone might lemmme telll ya about myself.  I'm a 29 year old soon to be father who is enjoying his brand new home.  Also (surprise surprise) I am an aspiring comic writer.  THe first pitch I'll be posting is the "Tales From the Loooking GLass."  It's an homage to the great TV programs of the past (Twillight Zone/ NIght Gallery)  In fact each story was written using a wonderful writing exercise detailed in his "Zen and the Art of Writing."  If you haven't read it you should.  they willl be others soon to foloow and I hope beyond hope that this gets noticed.  I think it's a really fun, cool comic with alot mass appeal.  Many times it's been pointed out to me that it's the type of comic people would like to read.  This is from those who don't read comics which is a great sign to me, because we're always talking about why mroe people don't read comics, and think it's because we DON'T WRITE FOR THEM!!  That's another soapbox for another time, infact probably the next one.  So if you've read this and want to keep reading while I extoll my drivel please stick around.  I love spirited discourse and hopefully look forward to seeing some response from some fine folks.

You know what here's that second blog entry now:

The comics industry can only blame itself for why we're still a niche' industry.  We're like some inside clique that doesn't want anyone else inside.  We write comics rife with inside jokes no one will get unless they're already in the group.  This makes the common person not want to buy comics.  Thus depriving us from a broader market base and increased sales.  This limits the industry and market.  we can not always rely on this industry being supported by a self replicating population where the love of this art form is passed down From parent to child.  We need to grow evolve and spread the love to those outside.  This is can only be good for the indutry as increased sales and liquidity encourages more innovation in story telling/ art/ etc.  what do you fine folks think?
