Well after saying I would go back to Elemental a few weeks ago I finally did it.  Tonight I had the inspiration to update the characters, worlds, synopsis and re-write 5 pages of the script.  I found the Theme Song for it this week and it just fit with everything I wanted the story to be.  I struggled with how I wanted to start the book and actually had two very different scripts partially written.  I decided to go with what I had originally wrote but significantly revamp it.

BTW - It was great to look back at what I wrote a year ago and see what my writing was like.  Man a difference a year makes!

You can probably guess by the title of the pitch that it is about people with powers related to the elements (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, etc) and their offshoots.  But trust me this isn't Captain Planet v2.0, it's not about going green and saving the planet.  I wanted to come up with a pitch where the powers that Elementals possess were somehow interconnected with the planet and this seemed like a good way to go.  I also stripped the entire corporation part out of the pitch as it wasn't necessary to the story as a whole.

At its core, its about a guy whose past catches up with him in the worst possible way when he has finally put everything behind him and started anew, but this time the risks to himself and those around him are greater then before and he can't runaway, he has to stay and fight.

And what a difference a year makes!  Having just read it yesterday, then the new improved version right now, I'm way impressed with the changes you made. The page to page navigation is a bit...

Oh yeah, if you haven't seen any of Season 3, don't read this if you want to stay surprised (hence why I had not read Foley's blog from a few weeks ago)!

But really, I'm not sure about this season.  I watched 3 episodes tonight and so far I have these thoughts;

a) I am so tired of future everybody, is this the only way this series can work going forward.  Haven't we been here for the last 2 seasons already?  I mean can't they just live in the present for awhile and fight problems in the present?

b) And speaking about future everybodies, why is everyone always the opposite of what they are now in the future?  I mean I love Cheeseburgers (LOVE), so 4 years from now could I completely hate Cheeseburgers and be a lobbyist against the creation of cheeseburgers?  It just seems very contrived and odd.

c) Haven't we seen these plot points played out before?  Peter's confused, Hiro is trying to go on a quest, HRG is still putting bad guys away, Nathan is President (in the future sometime), Parkman is still all wishy-washy guy saying "what" a lot, Surinder is still trying to figure out how to Bill Nye the Science Guy and Sylar is still slicing heads and taking names.

d) How come everyone and their mother can paint those cool paintings from the future now?  Parkman can do it now?  What?  Why?  Is there some power sharing guild that I don't know about?

The only thing I found really eye-opening so far that I went, "oh cool" was the Petrelli Mother's power and how it was Peter's first power.

I don't know, maybe I missed something (I did watch all of the season 3 episodes in a row tonight) but I get the feeling I've seen this before... I don't know... maybe when Season 1 and 2 came out?

I'll keep watching to see what happens, but right now I'm not as gaga as I was for it as I was when Season 1 came out.

I don't think Parkman can paint the future, just see it. With the help of drugs and trippy music. I may have missed something, though.

All I know is at the end of the arc, Peter will be...

I was inspired and had an idea - take 2 pitches from the site and create a new issue using characters from each respective writer's pitch.

This isn't meant to be a UT4 (as I have heard the topic might be collaborations).  You take your pitch, I take mine - if they need to be completed and updated (at least a well-developed characters, world, synopsis will do) and then we come up with a world where both pitches come together or how they would both interact.

So if you're interested, take a look at my stuff and see what might jive with yours (and let me know if you're interested so I can do the same), PM me and away we go.  If a lot of people are interested we could start up a group and see what everyone comes up with (just someone... please... please... do one with me... sniff... sniff... sniff)!

This isn't really meant to be a formal critiquing of one's work, just throwing two pitches together, having fun and seeing what comes out in the wash.

JB - see incoherent yet excited PM!  I picked you!  As a fan of your work I'd hate to ruin any of your good pitches though.  I'm putting thought into the Idea and will send it to you...

So I had a couple of pitch ideas while I was on my trip to the west coast and I started one in the pitch doctor before I left, Worlds Asunder. You might have noticed the name change a little from World Asunder to Worlds Asunder as I toyed with it in my head.

Right now I only have a synopsis up.  I'm reaching into the depths of all my Star Wars, Star Trek, Space Channel and anything else SciFi I have ever watched to pull this off so yes, at first it will be rough.

Here's the idea if you think about an Egg, throw a rock at it and it would explode, now compare this to all those disaster movies we have seen of asteroids hitting the Earth.  Yup it would hurt and yup it could probably blow us all into the next eternity.  But then what if  you cut the egg with a very precise laser?  Or if you cut it from the inside-out?  And therein lies the idea for Worlds Asunder.

The Earth has been carved into different islands but their orbit is still maintained by old core of the Earth (think about that Voyager episode where they encountered the planet made of water).  The image popped into my head while on the plane, a swirling ball of Lava surrounded by three floating rocks formerly pieces of the Earth.  I just couldn't shake the image and knew I had to write about it.

And do the inhabitants of these mini-worlds want to put the planet back to together?  Why of course, but all 3 pieces need to go back together (not just 2 of 3) because this might cause some inbalance in it's orbit, etc and all 3 would perish.

I know there are many possibilities and I think I need to bone up on some of my space knowledge to make things coherent but I think it will be an interesting ride if it's your thing.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!!!!!

This could get gruesome, you've been warned, here we go!

Fact:    The full extent of Blake's abilities are unknown to us.
Fact:    Blake's weaknesses are unknown to us.
Fact:    We have all tried to kill Blake, yet he lives.

Hypothesis:    Blake cannot be killed individually, it's time to gang up on him and put him down.

The Plan:
Jmcleod, distract Blake with some KD (everyone loves KD and this is his achilles heel).  When's he almost done his 8th bowl, Fetternity blind him with your photo (you know the one... don't make me link it).  Now if he reacts the way I think he's gonna react he'll be keeling over wretching up the 8 bowls of KD.  Now this is where it is going to get tricky (and gruesome), we each must focus our combined abilities.  Asclepius, GenreWriter, Tenzil it's time to put those spears to work and slice Blake open.  Quantum & MightyGeko, once Blake's chest cavity is open start ripping out his vital organs - heart, kidneys (yeah both let's get this right the first time), lungs, stomach (might still have some KD in there so watch out).  Quantum & MightyGeko when you are finished, take the organs and spike them on the spears of our noble spearmen.  Mekikas taunt Blake with the phrase we've all come to know and love;

"Let's see you recover from this."

Now if my theory is correct, Blake will be unable to regenerate new organs (this has not been exposed to us in the books, fix old ones yes, regenerate limbs/organs... hmmm haven't seen it?).  We will all gather around him and watch young Blake die.

And finally, Crackwalker, draw a chalk outline around the body with the caption - "Blake Carson we'll miss you".  Panicman123, write a beautiful goodbye poem to the man we knew as Blake Carson.

What will I be doing this whole time you ask?  Simple - recording it for YouTube of course.

In Stricken I have created a curse, and throughout the initial pitch I have dropped little clues here and there as to its origins (very little here) and it?s possible solution (more here but still much is in the dark).  I didn?t want to say too much about it because in mine?s eye, when someone read it I wanted them to be left wanting more and/or trying to figure it out themselves and keep following the story for my clues.  I?ve received some feedback from people on wanting to know more about the curse; its origins, where I am going with it, etc.  But I have been reluctant to reveal anything more for fear of ruining it.

In one of the episodes of the Gutter ? they talked about writers providing as much information as possible in one's pitch so the community can see where you want to take your pitch (and I could easily see someone reviewing all this information and going... "ah ok now I get it, yes I like the way you are slowly feeding this part to the reader"). Presumably if a pitch were to go forward I don?t imagine someone searching the ol? internet trying to unearth all the mysteries of said pitch (heh heh because I?d rip down this page before production started :P ).

So your thoughts?  Do you want to know everything and anything about Stricken (or about people?s pitches in general which could help you see it as a more rounded offering that would help you better vote for it)?  Or do you want to be left in a shroud of mystery waiting to see what happens in the next issue?

Gutter Plug

If you haven't already here are some great reasons to listen to the Gutter;

  1. The Pitch Rip - they go through every aspect of a pitch and dissect it down to its smallest detail
  2. Commentary on Z2H as whole is very interesting and they have pitch picks of the week
  3. Guest Interviewers from Z2H? find out what others in the community are saying.
  4. It?s funny as hell.

Over the weekend I got to thinking that I needed some good reading material for my trip tomorrow.  Some really intense material that I could get right into and be one of those people at the end of the flight to go "Oh we're here?"  I'm always bored (can't sleep on planes and the movies usually suck) and most times I bring a novel that I'm not really into.  But this time it is going to be different!

So here's what I got;

Watchmen - By Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons

I've been reading pieces of this here and there (in stores et al.) and decided to plunk down the coin and buy the TPB - I'll read it again and again and again.

Batman and Son - By Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert
I wanted to get something different so I started looking at the Batman TPBs and came across this one.  What initially drew me to it is it was drawn by Andy Kubert.  I've always liked his work from his days way back in X-Men, not overpowering but really good.  This is the only one I sneaked a peak at in the store and the writing by Morrison looked solid.

Understanding Comics By Scott McCloud
The prequel to Making Comics By Scott McCloud which I read earlier this summer (fantastic read, very insightful information on how to structure and layout a story).  I'd lend you my copy of Making Comics... but I brought it to the cottage this summer and some of it got wet in the boat... but I was able to dry out the pages by the wood stove so all is good... just a little crumpled.

So that's my reading, it's too bad I can't download pitches from the Pitch Doctor and save them to my laptop because that would just give me a ton more to read... I'll just have to settle for doing that when I get there.

Seeya in a different Timezone.

Man, it's been almost 2 weeks since I wrote a thing pitch wise.  My day job has been ramping up our product releases for the next year and my after-hours contract work has been sucking up every free waking moment in the evenings (why can't people just make a decision?  why do they have to see it 10 different ways in 4 different colours before they realize the first option was the best?).  So tonight I had it all planned - me, some Earl Grey Tea and the old Compy cranking out some pitches... aaah but it was not to be all that I hoped.

I've been dying to revamp one of my original pitches (Elemental).  I never really finished it and it still eats at me to complete.  I've started the first few pages which I think I'll post (hopefully sometime next week), if anything I just want to give it the due that is has in my head.  But not tonight - work et al. pushed this badboy to the backburner once again.

UT3 - what an incredibly diverse number of pitches each incredibly awesome with a different take on everything and anything supernatural.  Thanks to everyone who has reviewed and read Stricken and left some comments, it's greatly appreciated.  I made some updates to the script tonight, tightening up parts that didn't flow right.  I'm off to Seattle next week for work (sorry no stopover in Vancouver) so I'm looking forward to reading these in more depth as everyone has been updating their pitches (on a near daily basis?).  One thing I am going to start doing with all my pitches is to post a soundtrack (or song), this was a great idea (Crackwalker?) and fun to see what everyone else has picked.

So I got some writing in, just not all that I wanted to.

Holy Hannah - this is getting long.

Last but definitely not least, MightyGeko has posted his pitch (Heroes are mortal) that he has been blogging about the last little while - no script yet but the synopsis, characters and world are really well developed and the story is much more then what I had envisioned from his blogs - it's a great read and left me wanting more.  So stop reading and go check it out.
