I'm a little late for Friday, but I promised Angela, and here she is.

The other lads seem to be doing rather spontaneous sketches at work, and I thought I'd try to follow suit by keeping this quick. So I limited myself to half an hour (for the drawing; the colours took some extra time to slap down in Photoshop).

Now that it looks like we may actually get some ongoing commitment to this weekly sketch thing, perhaps it's time we really established some guidelines for ourselves. And I think it's about time we started using our own clever name, rather than relying on a borrowed one. Mr Stewart's clever name should remain his own :)
Any bright ideas?

We all seem content to make Friday the official posting day (even if we're a little late at times), so let's keep it at that, shall we?

And I think we're all content to make it specifically girls, right? Do we want to have weekly topics, or just leave it a free for all? Personally, I'd prefer to not have specified topics, since I like the spontaneous nature the recent drawings, and topics often require some amount of research, which tends to hold things up.

Thoughts?

That's not a bad suggestion, Dumo. I was thinking maybe we should have something with a Z2H or Zed reference in it, but I guess it's not really important. Alliteration is always good :)

This is a rendering of Will Gibson's Angela from the story ALMA - Jumbo the Elephant (check it out in the comics section now if you haven't already).  I did it in pencils, with a quick borrow of pencil crayons from TK Jr. to add a splash of color.  Enjoy!

Don't try this at home kids!  Call a professional next time!

p.s. It's a succubus, a mythological female demon who seduces men and then destroys them.
Actually, here's my Angela from Alma, too, just for the sake of boosting Will's ego with some fan art.  And please do consider it fan art, as I loved your story, being very taken with that era and tales of mystery.

I've gone stagnant lately, and I need to keep my brain working. Especially with the absolute dearth of work here in the office. So I've decided to give myself somethign along the lines of the MUP thing that floated around, but simultaneously a little more challenging and a little less strenuous. The Calender Challenge.

Each month, starting with October, I'm aiming to have up not just a pitch, but a script. A 12-page script [both to make it easier and to, I dunno, make it like one page for each month or whatever], titled after and thematically linked to the month in which it is written and set. I like the idea of self-contained non-continuing stories, having been reading mostly just short-story collections lately. So I'm gonna do it. Or at least try it. Or at least get one written. Wanna join? All are welcome to try and meet the challenge! What challenge? The CALENDER Challenge!

Look for OCTOBER, sooner than later. [It'll have zombies in it.]

So it's been what, a year or thereabouts since the first major wave of Z2H books came out. I seem to recall meeting Christian Major at FanExpo 2008, pondering his curious shoes, and wondering how the whole thing was going to turn out.

Well it's been a full 12 months, and where are we at? I see Stan's Last Deal just premiered, and I hafta say, quickly perusing it, it looks promising. I'll reassess after reading it, for sure, but I think it's a sign of, I dunno, something that I'm even looking. I go in fits and starts, I think. Jags and jiggers. And after the book launches and the Greenburg and the long cold winter, I sorta flew out of the gravity of the site. But maybe it's fall, maybe it's going to the Fan Expo again and seeing the trajectory of Jeff Lemire's career [who I realized I've been unconsciously stalking for the past 2 or so years], I've come back to wanting to write something, and make books and junk. Will it stick? Does it matter? I don't know. We'll see.

Anyway, it has been a year. Any reflection on the initial dozen books? I know there's no room for anything close to negative in this Utopian wonderland, so I don't expect anything like what hasn't stood the test of time, but what books have held up well? What, if any, have you re-read? Which do you feel NEED more issues and are being hobbled by their mere 22 pages, and which, conversely, have managed to be satisfying wholes within their own limitations? I re-read my own book just now, and... it's a little wordy, there are things I'd change, but damnit if I'm not my own biggest fan. But again, maybe that was my problem from the start.

I think it's been a while, and I'm still waiting patiently for the first big flaming superstar to rise out of this huddled mass. I may return to that. Or I may jot some notes down, maybe be productive for a change. That or go meet Jeff at the local comic store, get Sweet Tooth issue one signed, and attempt to get him to read ALMA or Paramour.

Pertaining to that always mysterious and oft-debated MacGuffin, the Meat Heater. Er, Heat Meter.

Why, why does it make no sense to me!?!

Hm. That was a short rant, all in all.

Maybe I will explain further my confusion. How can Paramour have what was the lowest Heat of any property, even of those not updated for, like, a year? It can't be ratings or reviews, 'cause it seemed to be decent on that front. Perhaps it's simply views that drive it. I have no clue. It's not community presence. Or, maybe, it is, but that sort of heat builds and cools extremely rapidly. Alma cracked the top 5 at one point, like magic heading into the creamy 90s, and then, like magic and with dizzying speed, rocketed back down into the milky mid-70s. Whereas Blake [not to disparage the property, honest*] has sat somewhere between 95 and 100 for the past few months, despite Mr. Cook's almost total absence from the clubhouse [where IS that guy, anyways? I sort of miss him]. So maybe the high heat properties just have more readers? But it must be new readers, as Blake hasn't been updated in a very long time, so I can't imagine it's returning people re-reading the comic... can it? Maybe!

Gah! I dunno. Someone will mention squirrels, and it seems most logical right now, but why do the squirrels pick on me?! I went so far as to delete the Paramour property entirely, because that 27 degrees was embarrassing. Who's gonna read something with that kind of crappy score?

Okay, I've mellowed now. I'll return to playing with my Transformers and enjoying the cold weather while it lasts. And maybe, MAYBE, do some work today.

Thank you and good night!!

*I tagged the blog with Blake out of fairness, as if, by some strange chance, this creates a discussion, my man J should get his share of the Heat. If this kind of stuff even generates it...

So I stumbled across something that I'm sure Inter-nerds have been aware of for some time [I'm behind the curve], called XtraNormal, where you can plug in a "script," slap some pre-designed expressions and actions onto computer people, and get what is essentially a bad highschool production of your script, if said highschool was, uh, a highschool for robots.

As such, I've decided to recreate as much as I can of a very old script called Jimmy the Squid in this funky XtraNormal way.

For those trying to keep up, Boxman is Jimmy. Imagine he's, you know, a 6-foot upright talking squid in a business suit. Also, if you want to have any real hope of following the story, the descriptions are sort of required.

Anyway, without further ado:

Part Zero
Part One
Part Two
Part Three
Part Four
Part Five
Part Six

I'll keep updating as more get made. It's gonna be HUGE!

PS: I've arbitrarily tagged this blog under my other properties, to farm some heat for them. I'm sneaky like that.

Perfect Pumpkin Pie:...
Happy Pre-Thanksgiving everyone!

Here's a recipe for Pumpkin Pie, courtesy of Food Network Canada:

Perfect Pumpkin Pie:

Ingredients:

Pastry:
  • 6 tbsp cold unsalted butter
  • 6 tbsp cold vegetable shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 4 to 5 tbsp ice water
Pie Filling
  • 2 cups canned pumpkin
  • 3/4 cup light brown sugar, packed
  • 3 tbsp fancy molasses
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp fine salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/3 cups whipping cream
  • 3 tbsp brandy or orange liqueur
Spiced Whipped Cream
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • pinch nutmeg

Directions:

For Pastry
  1. For pastry, freeze butter and shortening for 30 minutes. Combine flour, sugar and salt in a large bowl. Using a box grater, grate the butter and shortening into flour. Toss this mixture with your fingers to coat the fats, breaking up lumps with your fingers as you go. The dough should be a rough, crumbly texture and take on a slight yellow tone. Add 3 Tbsp of the water and mix with a spatula or wooden spoon to bring dough together, adding a little more water if needed. Shape dough into a disc and chill for an hour before rolling.
For Pie
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  2. On a lightly floured surface, roll out dough to just under ¼-inch thick. Dust the bottom of a 9-inch pie shell with flour and line with dough. Trim edges, keeping scraps to roll and cut for garnish, if desired. Chill while preparing filling.
  3. For filling, whisk pumpkin with brown sugar, molasses spices and salt. Whisk in eggs, then whipping cream and brandy or orange liqueur. Pour into chilled pie shell.
  4. Bake for 10 minutes, then lower temperature to 350 degrees F. and bake for 20 to 30 minutes, until filling puffs just a little around edges but still has a bit of jiggle in center when moved. Allow to cool to room temperature, then chill completely.
  5. To serve pumpkin pie warm, it is recommended to bake and chill completely, then re-warm in a 300 degrees F. oven for 15 minutes before slicing. Serve with spiced whipped cream.
Spiced Whipped Cream
  1. Whip cream with sugar and spices until medium peaks form. Dollop over the pieces of pie.

Also: according to "the internet," nothing goes better with Turkey than Alma: Jumbo the Elephant Chapter One [citation needed].

Looking at the finished comic again, I noticed something strange.  The date is September 15th, yet the leaves on the trees are in bright oranges and reds.  While some may take this as an artistic decision meant to contrast the blue tones of the nighttime scenes, I disagree.  If one takes Alma as a historical document, (and I do) this is evidence of a different phenology for the trees of Elgin county in past centuries.  Evidence is now shown that the trees of the Great Lakes Carolinian forest changed their leaf colour much earlier in the year then compared to now.  I suggest climate change as a likely explanation.  Any influence of evil spirits can be ruled out as the base level of psychokinetic energy has been clearly shown (Tobin, 2007)  to have not changed in recent eons.

open for debate.

Attention all! I'm going to premiere, for YOU, the first 4 pages of Alma: The Griffin Part One. This would be arc 2 [a shorty one] which would logically make it issue 5. Read, comment, critique, debunk! That's what this is all about, right?

ALMA: The Griffin Part One, Part One

PAGE 1

17th century map of the great lakes and upper Canada [as it would eventually be known].

CAP [as journal entry]: Luc, Pilot in command of schooner Griffin,

Having departed from Potawatomis the morning of Tuesday, and entering a fog thicke as pitch the evening last, as we have been asea for two days I have not a sign of where we might be headed. I am to direct our cargo south to the Niagaras, and yet the direction has eluded me. The fog remains through the night unto morn, and hangs about us still. We hear the drumming off the starboard bow again, and the Jesuits have taken to prayer. The men, reliable as one must demand, becoming unhinged at the manic droning beat, have taken to drink. Would that I could join them~

Above I hear a clamor, and I am away to investigate--

PAGE 2

A haggard sailor in 17th century attire stares off the bow of the ship. In the distance is a deathly thick fog, and deep within it appears to be a glowing sphere containing three burning globes arranged in a triangle.

HEADER: SSEP & Z2H Present ALMA: The Griffin Part One

CAP 1: 21 September, 1679

CAP 2 [as journal entry]: I see it! Even now. Off the prow, in the thickening mist, ever closer! The eye! The three-lobed burning eye!

PAGE 3

Panel 1

Looking at the front of the Griffin, a small-to-mid-sized schooner, listing violently to its starboard as a wave crashes into its port side.

Panel 2

The ship rocks violently and the sailor struggles to hold on to the mast. His eyes are wide with terror.

Panel 3

Behind the sailor, a huge head appears to just be cresting the side of the ship, water still rolling off of it.

PAGE 4

Panel 1

Mallory holds his hand up. He looks incredulous. He is seated in a tavern.

MALLORY: A moment, sir. What, if I may ask again, is the source of this tale?

Panel 2

A bald, grizzled man sporting an eye patch [how piratey!] stares Mallory down.

MAN: The journal, man. The pilot's logs.

Panel 3

Two-shot. The man holds a tattered journal up to Mallory, offering it to him across the table. A lead stein sits in front of him.

CAP: 6 October, 1885

MAN: Great with French I'm not, but I can read a good amount.

Panel 4

Mallory examines the weathered artifact.

MALLORY: Then you've a leg up on me, I'm afraid.

Panel 5

Mallory looks up at the Man.

MALLORY: I'd appreciate it greatly if you would continue.
