ChiefZero asked us (Professor WhizzyWig, the writer; smartens, the artist; and On-FireWire, the producer) to lay out the guerilla marketing techniques we used to support our pitch for this summer’s ReBoot relaunch. In response, we’ve collaborated on this “marketing guide” - we imagine that entrants to the Comic Creation Nation will find these tips useful. 

 

Now... the ReBoot contest was a WAR. Dog eat dog. Every man for himself. We went into this with the intention of actively winning – not sitting back and letting the pitch win for us. And sometimes you gotta bend the rules to win.

 

Therefore, we’ve divided this guide into two categories: Bob’s Marketing Tips, which are “in the spirit of friendly competition”; and Megabyte’s Marketing Tactics, which are, well, downright mercenary. You know what they say: “all’s fair in love and comic book contests.” 

 

Obviously the CCN is a different beast from the ReBoot contest. Original and exciting ideas will largely determine the winner and inter-team competition won’t be as brutal (they’re not fighting over the same kill). As such, these tips won’t help you one bit if your product is weak... but they CAN propel a reasonably good idea to stand out among the top performers – or even exceed them. Either way, these techniques - properly used - can convey an air of professionalism… and that goes a long way towards getting butts in seats.
