Words from the Creator: Committing suicide is the worst way to find out you're a superhero. In a world where crime is rampant, business has corrupted the intent of democracy, and humanity is spiraling ever downward into chaos, Blake is tired of the grind. A man mired in mediocrity, Blake decides to turn his back on the world and end it all, only to find that he cannot die. Ironic amusement gives way to desperation when repeated suicide attempts reveal to Blake that not only is death denied him, but he is slowly becoming harder to kill. He has been shot, stabbed, blown up and electrocuted, to no avail. Though each brief foray into death ends in failure, it still hurts every time. His doctor is baffled, the government can't stop him, and his ex-girlfriend can't decide whether or not to return his calls. Blake's last hope is to use his abilities to become a superhero in the hopes of attracting a nemesis as evil and ingenious as Blake is indestructible, to finally find a way to put him out of his misery once and for all. Even if it means helping the people that he so despises along the way.

For those of you who haven't heard yet, BLAKE UNDYING has won the Harold Greenberg Fund grant in the Zeros 2 Heroes contest. Competition among the 15 properties was fierce, and the four chosen as finalists were all fantastic works that I was also a fan of, so I count myself extremely fortunate to have been selected from amongst such high quality properties.

I want to thank my girlfriend Lisa Hughes and my family for their support, and the incredible amounts of time and energy contributed by my close friends, helping me to promote the comic. Especially Jen Cupples-McLeod for her tireless efforts on the site (and eggy dioramas), Dan Beech and Jamie Kerr for volunteering their time to plaster Winnipeg comic stores with posters, the entire IBM India staff for making my two month exile enjoyable and becoming core supporters of the comic, Carrie Evans for consulting on the blog for Cassidy Monroe that never saw the light of day, and finally to my aunt Anne Martell who, when I was at a young and impressionable age, told me that if I enjoyed writing to just do it, even if it were only for myself. It seemed the most natural thing in the world to her, and her casual conviction still inspires me to this day.

A special thanks to Dylan Edwards and Christian Major of Hero High and Deutschmaschine fame, my fellow Gutterites, for helping me with press release verbiage and advertising strategies even though we were all technically in direct competition. They have taught me a great deal about professionalism and artistic integrity, and I have valued the experience I've gained from working with and competing against them. There is an old adage that says "Steel against iron is not a testing", and their incredibly strong properties forced me to bring my A-Game to the table. I have no doubt that they shall have immense success in the future. (I'd say the same for Jennica Harper, but it looks like she's having immense success *already* ;)

Among the 15 properties, I can say without reservation that all of them (Yes, even you Will) are fantastic work, and I know that they too will find success in short order. Their quality speaks for itself, and I am humbled to have been singled out from among such giants. Thank you all for setting such a high standard for us to live up to.

As luck would have it, it was one year ago yesterday that I joined Zeros 2 Heroes and posted my first pitch, BLAKE UNDYING.

A year from now, it might be you.

Thank you all,

So TK Jr. decided it was time to earn a few more fridge magnets to expand his set, so he came up with this, the third installment in the eagerly anticipated, always exciting, wacky and wonderful "Invasion of the Zeds" courtesy of his fridge magnet art.  Enjoy!

It can be a little hard to take it all in at that size, so he has broken it down into panels for you.

And here is the chapter and title.

Panel one of the action, featuring Deutschmaschine.

And the final panel featuring Blake and a dragon!

Only the first issue of Blake Undying is finished.  However, the writer Jason Cook just won a grant to work on turning it into a screenplay.  So you'll probably see more of it in the...

I don't know too much about Dead Space, but Space + Aliens + Zombies = Halo.  I mean, the Flood was basically zombies and the rest speaks for itself.

(a response to Jimmymcwicked's blog "please.... do it....")

Jimmy, the goal for this site was and always has been the promotion of a property, in any number of different media streams. Be it comics, television, video games, etc. If a comics studio woke up one morning (got themselves a gun), came to Zeros 2 Heroes and said "Hey, we want to put Blake Undying into full production as a comic", I would say fantastic. I have a few years worth of scripts to fall back on. (I'd probably even enlist you, your stuff is awesome.)

The problem at this point is visibility. Z2H is still promoting the property to stuidos and execs, and now they'll have one more item to shop around. I have a plan in place for either a comic, a television series or movie. All that remains now is for someone to take notice. Personally, I truly do want Blake Undying to have a comic one day. The plan is in place, all I need now is a studio willing to put their name on it, and for that to happen they need to see Blake as a viable property. Self-sustaining.

This is essentially the first year of a embryonic experiment in social networking and collaboration. Even if I'd not won the contest, the people I've met and the connections I'd made here have made it more than worthwhile. I will do everything I can to bring my idea to fruition not only for myself, but for everyone else here at Zeros 2 Heroes. There are so many ideas here that deserve their time in the sun, and if I can help make that happen then I would be proud to do so. I want to see Hero High on Teletoon, or Deutschmaschine the anime, or Slaughter Inc the video game.

...Goddamn would I play Slaughter Inc the video game. I can see it now: Equal parts Dead Rising, Mercenaries, and Civilization. I had no idea how good a game that would be until this very moment. But I digress...

There are 15 properties that have proven themselves, and more coming up through the ranks every day. If I can help that process along with a screenplay, I'll do it. Does it make me want a comic less? Not remotely. Just have to move one step at a time.

I have to second what Lord Maim is saying here.  Just because his property has won a grant to write a screenplay does not mean he is abandoning his comic nor his idea to make his comic continue...

More than 6 months have passed since a pitch of mine got selected to become a comic as part of C:CCN. We were 12. Added to that were the 3 Beta Books, as well as another underground-developped book. All of those involved in the process of creating those books have worked tirelessly, endured, even sometimes suffered. As we know, the whole thing culminated in the contest for the Harold Greenberg Fund.

When my own pitch was first selected by the community o become one of CCN's comics, I wrote an entry, thanking the community for its support and faith. And to this day, I still remember the first comment that this entry received. The comment came from Jason Cook, and I am here today to mirror it in light of yesterday's announcement:

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

However this time I need to add:
Provided nice guys also drink, curse, swear, are delightfully perverse, swear oaths to Yog-Sothoth and eat kittens.

As you know Jason, I wouldn't have said no to a grant (heck, who would?), but from the get-go my money was on you. Too bad it was Monopoly money, but hey, I'll know better next time :)

So now you only have to do the same thing you did back in the days, as the first winner of CCN: keep us in the loop. Tell us what's happening. Give us a heads-up!

And to all the writers on the site, I say this: the floodgates are now open!! The sky's the limit.

Hail to the King, baby!

- Christian

Now that all this other hooplah is over with, here's the results of the contest that you've really been waiting for. (Not that its more exciting, just that I kept you waiting. ;)
The winners of the Blake Undying "Open Season" Contest!

First of all, let me open by agreeing with Mekikas that you are all sick and should seek professional help immediately. That aside, the imagination and variation on the entries was truly astounding. I had a great deal of trouble choosing the winners, because there were some fantastic answers. It had to be done however, so the winners are:

4th Place: SheaKohan for Killing Blake Fun which was just gruesome.

3rd Place: PWB for SQUISH! (though technically, you should share it with jmcleod for her accompanying diorama.)

2nd Place: Asclepius for Blake Dying - Option 4, which was also gruesome. ;)

1st Place: Princess of the Universe for Viva Pompeii! That seems like a cheap, effective, and incredibly painful death. I would not want to be the one who suggested it, in case he survives however. ;)

In honor of Radioactive Shirtless Fett, all winners will receive one of the brand new T-Shirts for "THE GUTTER" which will feature the Gutter logo on the front and "I JOINED LORD MAIM'S CABAL AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT" on the back.

All winners will also receive their choice of blakeundying.com or syncgrove.com email addresses, which will be signed up for all manner of unseemly mailing lists.

The First place winner will also receive their choice of a signed copy of the script from BLAKE UNDYING Chapter 1 "Failure", random future BLAKE UNDYING merchandise, or a featured question on the next Ask Lord Maim video segment.

Thanks for playing, everyone! And thanks again for supporting BLAKE UNDYING!

Hello folks,

Long time, no talk: we've been cooking up a lot of fanboy goodness behind the scenes here at Z2H. You've seen the launch of our Comix 101 program, which is awesomeness incarnate. And there are few things we can't quite talk about yet... but we know you will appreciate.

But I had to take some time to announce/congratulate the comic selected to go to screenplay through the good offices of the Harold Greenberg Fund. It was a tough call for those folks and we had more than one consultation with them as they wrestled with their choice.

But, at the end of the day, they went with Blake Undying. Jason Cook will be receiving a $15,000 grant to turn that comic into a feature length screenplay. I don't know about him, but I am freakin' excited.

More importantly, though, this signals the start of what we hope will be a long-standing relationship with the Fund... something that can only mean more opportunities for Z2H creators. So keep sharpening those quills and honing those ideas... it could be your turn next.
